Spring Thaw

Colossians 1:3-5 “We give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, 4 since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of your love for all the saints; 5 because of the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, of which you heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel.”

Spring Thaw

Perhaps you’ve been seeing large drops of water, melted snow, dripping of the eves of your house. A spring thaw seems to be coming upon us. And none to soon. The drips aren’t the only signs. There’s bare patches of ground where the snow has melted away, revealing grass already beginning to green. There is increased activity at the bird feeders. Near the edge of the house, where the snow has already melted, crocus shoots are pushing their way upward as if they are stretching for the sun.

A change in weather isn’t the only spring thaw God’s people should experience though. I’m seeing a “spring thaw” in other places too, in the lives of members. The greatest change and the greatest happiness comes when “rays of light” of grace and glory come from the Son, thawing hearts that have struggled in the icy grip of temptation and sin. The Son melts away pride, self-absorption, and bitterness allowing love, faith and joy to spring forth. We can even speed up the process. By spending less time talking about personal woes and spending more time “basking” in the Son; His love, His blessings, singing God’s praises, spending a thoughtful hour each day studying the life of Jesus, His ministry, and His sacrifice at Calvary for you, for me, – to pay the debt for our sins.

Friend, the human heart will continue to reach out in response as we see the depths of our Father’s love, mirrored through the life and love of His Son.

Spring thaws sometimes take more time than we wish, but time eventually accomplishes her task. Keep your focus on Jesus, the spring thaw of your heart will fully come, the Author of our faith has also promised to be the Finisher of our faith.
