Love’s Transforming Power

NKJ Romans 12:9-11 “Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good. Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord;”

It’s February, and “Annabelle” has been a part of the Wise family for two years now. We thought it would be good for Michelle to have a pet, which she desperately wanted, and learn from the responsibilities that come with one. So, the family visited a local animal shelter. Michelle and I found some very cuddly kittens, but in the end we yielded to Julie’s choice, she’s really the cat lover of the family.

Even for a cat, or kitten at the time, she was aloof! Annabelle, like most cats, was ready to interact and play – on her terms. I didn’t pay too much attention to our cat initially. I’d pet her and treat her kindly when she came around. Before long I noticed she was coming around more and more often. Apparently, she discovered my office was a good place to go when she needed a refuge… I didn’t allow Michelle to chase in after her, bother her, or remove her when she came into my office.

At first Annabelle seemed quite content to simply cat nap in a corner or on a book shelf. She’d occasionally stroll by for a tummy rub. But she was definitely not a lap cat. Time truly changes things. As Annabelle learned that she was loved and safe she has become very affectionate. Even as I wrote this article, she jumped on my lap for a nap and to be petted.

Perhaps you’ve encountered people who aren’t as friendly as you think they ought to be. Maybe they need a refuge – an environment of safety and love where they can grow into what God has planned for them. Perhaps God is calling you to be a refuge as you guide them to Him – humanity’s true refuge. Its amazing how time and love change people.

“The love of Christ, manifested in unselfish ministry, will be more effective in reforming the evildoer than will the sword or the court of justice… Often the heart that hardens under reproof will melt under the love of Christ.” MH 106.2
