Bible Study

There are a couple of phrases Jesus uses frequently in the Gospels: “Have you not read” (Matt. 12:3,5; 19:4; 22:31; Mk. 12:10,26; Lk. 6:3), and “It is written” (Matt. 4:4,6,7,10; 11:10; 21:13; 26:24,31; Mk. 7:6; 9:13; 14:21,27; Lk. 3:4; 4:4,8,10; 7:27; 19:46; 24:46; Jn. 6:31,45; 12:14).

Certainly Jesus’ expectation was that God’s children would become and be Bible literate because the Bible teaches us about Jesus and the gospel (John 5:39). And when we know Jesus we will know the Father (John 14:7-10).

The Bible contains profound truths that can be challenging, and truths that we will never be able to exhaust learning about. But it also contains truth that even a child can understand when the Scripture texts are read, studied, and believed in their proper context (2 Timothy 3:15-17).

Here are a couple of key points that will help you in your studies:

1) Spiritual things are spiritually understood (1 Corinthians 2:14). While it can be helpful to consult with a godly pastor, or other church leader, ultimately, it is the same Holy Spirit who inspired the Bible writers, who can help us to understand it. And He will, if we truly desire to learn of God and follow Him. So start your Bible reading and study with prayer, asking God for the Holy Spirit’s leading.

2) The Bible should be taken as one complete book including both the Old and New Testament. The Old and New Testament is made up of many smaller books. Truths that may seem ambiguous or hard to understand in one passage are clarified in others. Comparing and learning what the entire Bible says about any given topic or theme will help keep you balanced (Isaiah 28:10). An exhaustive Bible Concordance, such as Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance, can be a very helpful tool in your Bible study.

3) If something in Scripture isn’t clear to you after some prayer-reading-studying-comparing of passage-prayer, don’t give up! Patiently wait on God to clear up the confusion. Remember, a child generally learns addition and subtraction before they can learn multiplication and division. Perhaps there are other truths God wants you to learn first – and He will lead you to them if your willing and patient.
